In order for me to get the BBC I have to double my cable bill. Granted, a PBS channel carried by my provider does show one 30 minute BBC news show at 5pm when I'm not even home from work yet. But, the whole idea that we can change the channel and the veil over our eyes will be lifted is rather naive. I believe, and it may sound paranoid, that our lack of real news media is not a function of their ownership as your comment stated but, a conscious and concerted effort to keep the people of this country ill-informed. I also believe that this effort is both governmental and commercial in nature. As example, perhaps not the best, is the long running COPS show. I don't know, how long has that been on? 20 years now? Is it really that popular? Really? I mean, sure, it was interesting the first 10 episodes but, it's repetitive. And what about all the CSI's, the Law & Orders and other "legal" shows and cop shows constantly pounding in the concept that if you break the law then you're going to be caught and you're going to confess to your crime at length in minute detail? I've seen these shows. They're not that interesting. Are they really so popular that there is public support for so many of them AND being played constantly throughout the day via syndication? My God, TNT plays Law & Order 3 to 1 against other content. CSI and all of its various flavors can be found on multiple networks.

2) Reading blogs as a source of "news". Are you joking? Bloggers lack "official" recognition as news media, hence will never gain access to sources in the manner that the "news media" is capable of doing. Nor will blogs ever have real credibility. Perhaps due to comments of beliefs such as my own which clearly can be construed as paranoid or conspiracy theory blogs will most likely never be accepted as real and fundamental news sources. I know there are some blogs out there making real contributions. But, they suffer from an avalanche of information overload for which individuals much shift through in order to find. And then those blogs' articles must be taken with a grain of salt.

Face it. As a people, we are screwed. There is no real news any more. Case and point an article I saw this morning on CNN about patient zero of the h1n1 virus, a boy in Mexico who lives near an industrial sized pig farm from which they suspect the virus came. Requests to go inside the farm were denied however, documentation was provided from the government to show that "testing" revealed no swine flu. End of story. Wow! How informative. That was some real investigative reporting.
